The Dundee Jam: a series of events for videogame creators to meet up and make simple, fun little videogames. It is not actually jam-related in any way. Although that would certainly be nice too (and better in many ways)

News

2008-11-13 Bonfire and The Frightening

The last of the Jam #3 games, we have Bonfire by Kestutis Tauckela, and The Frightening by Malcolm Brown.

2008-11-11 Trick or Meat and Zombietris

Aaron Puzey completes his zombie trilogy with his latest, Trick or Meat, while Thomas Kronberg brings us Zombietris. I know, I know - he used "tris" in the title. Please don't sue us.

2008-11-11 And Lo, The Jam Did Flow

So last Saturday, Jam #3 happened. Yes, it did, and Dundee Jam would like to extend warm thanks to all who made it possible including our hosts at Abertay University Whitespace. Thanks too to the dedicated Jammers who gave up a Saturday to toil away to make some games!

Expect the games to appear here very shortly.

2008-10-19 Spooky Jam!

After a short break, the Dundee Jam is back!

Our next event takes place on Saturday, November 8th, 2008 in Abertay's Whitespace facility, in Dundee. If you're interested in participating, please let us know in advance so we can plan the numbers etc.

The theme of the Jam is "Hallowe'en and Bonfire Night" so hopefully that will get those spooky creative juices flowing!

As usual, all disciplines (art, design, programming, audio) are welcome and for the programmers out there, we even have a simple C/C++ engine (complete with examples) if you don't fancy writing your own or starting from scratch.

2008-06-02 Game Boy Audio

Colin has kindly provided some tunes to demonstrate the use of his Game Boy synth with Reason and Ableton, along with the relevant resource files etc.

2008-06-02 AntiRain

The last of Saturday's games. This is AntiRain from "Dev" aka Dibyendu Das. Check it out!

2008-06-02 More Jam Games

Some more games from Saturday's Dundee Jam event - Build? from Aaron Puzey, Cowboy Builder from Rob Black, Lyall Bruce and Tom Kane, and Up The Garden Path from Paul Grenfell.

Paul has also kindly provided source code for his game! If feedback is positive we may be doing more of that sort of thing in the future, to encourage others to have a go...

2008-06-01 Raq Em Up!

Another game added, this time it is a bloody yet adorable take on warfare entitled Raq Em Up! which is from Ian Kiigan and Richard Carr. Download it and check it out!

Will keep adding more games over the next 24 hours so keep coming back...

2008-06-01 Game Boy Audio Project

Our second Dundee Jam was host to a unique non-videogame audio project, from musician / game audio veteran Colin Anderson. Some MP3 examples are coming soon, but in the meantime Colin has kindly provided some notes on the exercise.

2008-06-01 Sandcastle

The fifth game from yesterday's Jam event is now online - Sandcastle. Mike's game is obviously more technologically advanced than the rest - he made the engine using XNA beforehand, and spent the Jam day making a game out of it. So we feel it is very much in line with the spirit of the event.

2008-05-31 The First Four

The first four games from today's Jam are now available. These three are "Buildings", "Build Me A Baby Inc", "Treehouse" and "Botty". Some screenshots:

More coming soon.

2008-05-31 Jam Complete

The second Dundee Jam event has just finished, and everyone has worked really hard over the course of 8 hours to produce some fun, original games. As of 7pm today everyone had a playable game on display - so everyone produced something!

Games to follow very soon.

2008-05-29 Pre-Jam Thanks

The second Dundee Jam event takes place tomorrow! This time around there has been LOTS of interest and support from other game developers around Scotland - who says the games industry doesn't support creativity? Time for some thank-yous...

  • The event is being hosted in the shiny new multi-million pound Whitespace facility in the University of Abertay, who have been absolutely lovely every step of the way.
  • Dundee-based game developers Denki have kindly come up with some sponsorship money to cover the costs of snacks and brain-food!
  • Games industry PR legend Brian Baglow of Indoctrimat gave us lots of nice coverage over on Scottishgames.biz so we love him too.
  • Graphic design powerhouse Lyall Bruce of Sooper Double D has been giving us some love over on his Creative Dundee site, and is helping us to film and document the event tomorrow, in addition to participating in the Jam itself!
  • Lastly, thanks to all the game developers running their own Jam events around the world who've sent message of support and encouragement!

So, no pressure to produce some decent games tomorrow then...

2008-05-05 Jam #2: "Build"

A theme has been set for the second Dundee Jam taking place later this month - that theme is "Build".

Also a new release of the JamEngine is now available, and includes some new features such as bitmap font support.

Feedback welcome!

2008-04-21 JamEngine Beta

A proper release of the JamEngine is still forthcoming (due the first week of May 2008) but in the meantime here's the beta version in case anyone wants to get familiar with it. All feedback gratefully received!

Download here.

2008-03-24 Get Off Yo Ass And Jam!

More Jam! Bigger, stickier, jammier!

Mark your calendars, because Dundee Jam #2 is now set for Saturday, May 31st. All suggestions for a theme welcome!

2008-03-10 Behind The Boulders

Several "Friends of the Jam" have asked for some "behind the scenes" stuff - design notes to demystify the whole process for someone who has never made a game.

With this in mind, the creator of "Crumble!" has put together some design notes, which help explain the thinking behind the game.

Of course, if you haven't yet played the game, now's the time.

2008-03-09 Crumble!

How late do you have to be before you're absent? This is the question posed by the ludicrously tardy entry from INDUSTRY LEGEND and mammal, Gary Penn.

His excuse? Well between family commitments and schmoozing it up at GDC, there just wasn't time. However! Expert Dundee Jam adjudicators are now satisfied that his entry "Crumble!" has remained true to the spirit of the Jam - it was made over the course of seven and a half hours, spread over a longer period.

Now go have a play, because it is bloody good fun.

2008-03-08 Photos of Jam #1

Ever wonder what a bunch of geeks in a room looks like? You did? Well finally, your hunger for knowledge is satisfied here.

2008-03-08 A Bunch of Updates

We're pretty much booked to capacity for Jam #2, but fear not - we're already investigating possible alternative venues for Jam #3 which would allow more people to attend. So if your keen to get involved, just drop us a line. We're also happy to have a number of people involved remotely - ideal if you're elsewhere in Scotland and can't make it to Dundee easily.

Also, thanks to everyone who has linked to us - we've had lots of fun checking out sites all over the world who have SOMEHOW heard of what we're doing. We now have a Facebook group too, growing steadily!

Breaking news: we're about to add a Extremely Late Entry from a games industry LEGEND! Oh yes. Watch this space.

2008-03-07 Jam #2 Themes

We're getting ready to announce the second Dundee Jam, and we need to get some ideas for a theme!

The theme is intended to be something clear and non-specific - for example a single word or simple phrase. Please email any suggestions - all input gratefully received.

2008-02-26 Special Late Entry

Yes that's right, we've decided to bend the rules a bit and accept a late submission from A. Puzey. His excuse for non-attendance on the 23rd was watertight and frankly the game is too much fun not to post - adding as it does to the sadly under-represented zombie gardening genre. Extra points for sticking to the theme as well. Now go play.

2008-02-25 Register Your Interest

Now that the Dundee Jam #1 is out of the way, we're in the process of reviewing how it all went, as well as planning Dundee Jam #2. So if you've discovered this site and fancy joining us for some old-school seat-of-your-pants indie game development next time around, please register your interest so we have an idea what size venue to look for etc. Be sure to check out our information page about the Dundee Jam first though, to see if it sounds like your cup of tea.

Who can come? We hope to open the next event up to Scottish game developers (professional or hobbyists alike!).

2008-02-25 Stragglers

There are always a few stragglers! One of the Jammers / Jammees (must make a decision on that soon) was ill on the 23rd but STILL managed to get a game made - how hardcore is that? "BHS (Bullet Hell Survive" by P. Grenfell is now online. Here's a pic:

And T. Kane gives us a physicsy multiplayer game "Super Vivere" which comes with some rather soothing music. Here's a screenshot:

2008-02-24 Four Games Up

Four of the six games are now online with the rest to come very soon! Here are some screenshots to tempt you further. Also it has to be said that although the Dundee Jam isn't a competition, it was "Vegetable Soup Tactics" by Stewart Hogarth and Lyall Bruce that everyone seemed to enjoy playing the most on the day.

2008-02-23 We Jammed Hard

Oh, how we jammed. Hard! It's now 8pm, and everyone is damn tired. Some have fled to the pub, some to their respective families, but everyone made a game so by any reasonable standards the day has been a great success. Details, photos, and games to appear here very soon!

2008-02-20 T-Shirts!

You haven't arrived until you've set up a store on Cafe Press! Now, for anyone who really wants to profess their love of jam to the world, they can do so here.

2008-02-20 The Jam Engine

After some hard work put in by one of our group, we now have the first "Jam Engine" ready for action on the 23rd! The idea is to have a simple 2D sprite engine ready for anyone to use, so if you aren't bringing in your own pre-existing code you don't need to start from nothing. After all, the goal is to make something fun over the course of a day, so no one wants to be wasting valuable time making tech when they could be making games!

2008-02-19 Getting Closer

The 23rd is getting closer, and despite keeping a low profile so far we've had a lot of interest from folk looking to get involved in future Jams. Which bodes well! Just to remind everyone, our first event is basically a "test run" with a relatively limited number of people, but if rest assure if it goes okay we definitely want to open up the events to more people. Thanks to all who've sent kind words of support!

2008-02-14 Survive

We've picked the theme for our first jam: that theme is the word "Survive". Will it be an endless stream of zombie games? Will the coders be predictable and do a bunch of quasi-retro wire-frame space shooter games? Come back after the 23rd to find out!

2008-02-09 Site Live

Domain name registered, and website live! This is just a placeholder site until we get a chance to do something decent. Our first event takes place on 23rd February, so please come back soon!
